Pay attention to the changes of the tenses

if in the direct speech we use:

Changes also occur in the adverb of time

if in the direct speech we use:
if in the indirect speech we use:
  1. now
  2. next (week)
  3. tomorrow
  4. last (year)
  5. an hour ago
  6. yesterday
  7. two hours ago
  8. today
  9. tonight
  1. then/at that time
  2. the following (week)
  3. the following day
  4. the previous (year)
  5. the previous hour
  6. the present day
  7. two hour before
  8. that day
  9. that night

Study the following sentences.
  1. The truck driver said he did not see the car approaching.
  2. The truck driver said, "I do not see the car approaching."


Sentence number 1 is a reported speech and sentence
Number 2 is a direct speech. Reported speech is used when we want to report what someone said.

Direct Speech
1. He said, "I buy a newspaper every day."
2. He said, "I am buying a newspaper."
3. He said, "I have bought a newspaper."
4. He said, "I bought a newspaper."
5. He said, "I will buy a newspaper."
6. He said, "I can buy a newspaper."
7. He said, "I may buy a newspaper."
8. He said, "I must buy a newspaper."
9. He said, "I have to buy a newspaper."
10. He said, "Buy a newspaper."

Reported Speech
1. He said (that) he bought a newspaper every day.
2. He said he was buying a newspaper.
3. He said he had bought a newspaper.
4. He said he had bought a newspaper.
5. He said he would buy a newspaper.
6. He said he could buy a newspaper.
7. He said he might buy a newspaper.
8. He said he had to buy a newspaper.
9. He said he had to buy a newspaper.
10. He told me to buy a newspaper.


Change the sentences into indirect speech
  1. Kiko promised me, “I will come to your house tomorrow.”
  2. Mr. Untung said,”Son, I cannot afford you to buy a new bike.”
  3. Rendy says, “I’m very hungry.”
  4. Cici said,” My mother is ungry.”
  5. Hani told Lia,”I was in town last week.”
  6. Father said, "Open the window."
  7. Ms Anissa said, "Don't forget to do your homework."
  8. Prasti said, "I'm going to go on a vacation to Medan."
  9. Mr. Siregar said, "I want you to help me delivering some books."
  10. Bondan said, "I'm happy for you, Renita."
  11. Retno said, "You should read the news."
  12. Anita asked, "Have you read today headline news?"
  13. "I'm will be a freelance reporter," said Andri.
  14. Kania said, "I will write an article to the local newspaper."
  15. Deni asked, "What is the hot celebrity gossip today."

Change the sentences into direct speech
  1. He told me to shut the door.
  2. Brian said that his father would go to the Jakarta the following week.
  3. Femi said that she had passed her examination.
  4. Ari said to me not to go out then.
  5. Mr. Pras asked the pupils to close their textbook.
  6. Hamdan asked me to participate in school workshop.
  7. Nia wanted me to return her books that I borrowed.
  8. Mr Ardi ordered me not to forget submitting my assignment.
  9. Alya said she going to watch a new movie tomorrow.
  10. Mrs Zakia told me to meet her in the office.
